Many of you have been asking why I went to St Clair Medical and not to Public if I did not have the $ to pay. This is how it happened.
On Tuesday 4th I began vomiting, with very slight fever and body aches. Having had dengue once, it felt exactly like that (there are 4 types of dengue, so you can get it 4 times) Covid was negative.
Still vomiting Wed, so I went to St James 7.30 a.m. They took blood for tests including dengue. After continuous vomiting, they eventually put an I.V. After midday.
Vomiting continued. They gave Gravol and nexium which eased it for about 1/2 hr and they sent me home. They said test results will take 3 days at least.
After reaching home vomiting started back. Took Gesol. My mom was worried, so she spoke to a doctor, who also thought it could be dengue, and advised urgent hydration, to keep platelet count up.
My parents agreed to take me to St Clair to get a dengue test, and to get 24 hr hydration, to prevent organ damage, etc, etc.
Prior to admission, a routine Covid test was done which was Positive.
St Clair’s policy is not to admit patients who test positive. They had just opened a small Covid where positive patients are kept away from the others.
As I pretty much needed mostly hydration kinda urgently, my parents said ok.
The estimate/deposit was $30,000, but as I was only expected to stay 24 to 36 hrs, it should be less.
I ended up spending 3 nights as I still vomited on the 2nd day. When I left ( on Sun) we got a bill for just over $32,000. Parents said ok, they will manage. Three days later we were told that items used over the weekend were not included in the bill we received, and that bill, AFTER being given a discount was $49, 800 Another few days later, it was changed to $50, 707 for the Covid Unit, and another odd $2900 for the initial bill at Accident & Emergency. So total $53,600.
My family were able to pay $30,000, and another small amount in a couple days.
I am trying hard to get a job to be able to assist.
