With Carnival 2021 officially cancelled because of ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19 Idakeda Group, producers of Kambule - the ritual re-enactment of the 1881 Canboulay Riots - are keeping the spirit of the season alive with a series of events and activations focused on keeping the spirit of Carnival alive.
Kambule, written by Eintou Springer is being produced in the form of a docu-drama directed by award winning filmmaker Maya Cozier.
It tells the story of the Canboulay Riots of 1881, exploring images and imagined conversations of that time of unrest and using interviews with Eintou Springer, Rawle Gibbons and Rondel Benjamin to tell the story in the present day.
This is an important intervention in light of the official cancellation of Trinidad Carnival, and the continuing uncertainty as to when there will be a return to public festival forms due to Covid19.
As with many other areas of Carnival we have been financially affected by the decision to not stage any official events.
