Greetings Brothers & Sisters,
My name is Ben and I have been differently-abled (Cerebral Palsy) from birth and It was only until I started going out in public with my family that I realized how different I was being viewed in the eyes of the public. My my father found it a bit difficult to accept me with this condition at first, but after being educated via medical specialist, therapist etc. he realized I will be able to accomplish lots of great things with their help.
My parents raised funds to send me to therapy specialist in Miami for the much needed therapy after a successful operation which was done in Trinidad... The therapy was so successful that I was able to walk unaided until I returned home (Trinidad & Tobago), which still has no facilities available for persons with disabilities... Although I still feel that more can be done to rehabilitate me, I am still grateful I was given a second chance of living a life as close to normal as possible.
Back then, the views of the public was that persons with disabilities should be locked away at home but my mom helped answer my questions/concerns and always encouraged me to be positive, focus and trust in GOD... I went everywhere we were going as a family and they wasn't ashamed of me. The strength I got from GOD and my family gave me the confidence to stay focus and complete my Schooling (from primary to secondary)... I was also able to achieve my independence around my mid 20's such as; travel on my own without assistance, hold on to a job for over 15 years, obtain and manage my own home, of which I am still doing today... I encountered many challenges in achieving each of these goals but transportation continues to be one of biggest problems in achieving other goals in my life from then to present.
The Government of our country (Trinidad & Tobago) is not doing enough... They are not putting all the necessary laws & systems in place to integrate/level the playing field for persons with disabilities of which an accessible, customer friendly transportation system is at head of this list.
I am aspiring to venture into the business of providing an accessible transportation system and empowering persons with disabilities like myself to learn to drive if they desire plus more... My first task in this venture is: setting up the office with computer, website, stationery, etc. (building our brand), registering the Non-profit Organization,. to build a database of differently-abled (ambulatory & non-ambulatory) persons who require transportation. The second task is to raise enough funds to start purchasing the vehicles to begin offering the service firstly to our membership.
This Organizating will managed by mostly differently-abled persons and perents with differently-abled children.
WE NEED YOUR HELP IN MAKING THIS DREAM A REALITY AND FOR INTEGRATION AMONGST OUR PEOPLE TO PREVAIL.
GIVE A LITTLE HELP A LOT !
