July 4 2021 marked 129 years of service by the parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church to the people of Sangre Grande and environs. Within these years the Church has contributed to the development of the area and to many persons through religious and moral formation, education and social outreach. The Church’s playground is regularly used by youths and adults for recreational activities and our premises are regarded as a “safe” space that is open to all persons. We at St. Francis R.C. continue to function as a strong community / partner in times of need.
The current church building was constructed in the late 1950’s after the original church located in Upper Sangre Grande was deemed unsafe after the1954 Earthquake. The current church has been marginally improved in the mid 1990’s, during our 60+ years being located on Brierley Street. It is now in need of immediate and urgent repairs to secure the structural integrity of the building, which was partly compromised by severe flooding during the rains of October 2018. Renovation works have been estimated in the sum of 5 million dollars.
