Salim Williams is a 7 yr old boy who was born naturally and without any complications at birth. However, within the first 48hrs post partum he developed jaundice, which was not immediately treated at the hospital. This delay in medical care caused the bilirubin level in the jaundice to increase beyond the threshold of what was safe to be treated without adverse effects. Consequently, Salim experienced brain damage as the bilirubin fluid went up into his spinal chord. The parts of his brain dealing with mobility and speech were affected to the extent that he was diagnosed in 2016 with cerebral palsy and global development delay at the Centro Internacional de Rehabilitación Neurológica (CIREN) in Cuba.
Due to a lack of public facilities such as schools for children with neurological and physical disabilities, his mother had to leave her job in 2014 to take care of Salim. She is therefore his primary caregiver. In Trinidad one cannot receive therapy like what Salim needs at our public health facilities. Through fund-raising ventures which his mother organizes, Salim goes to private therapy sessions such as physiotherapy, CME, occupational therapy, aqua therapy, speech therapy and hippo therapy. These therapies are weekly sessions.
Due to his age and stage of physical progress, his CME physiotherapist advised the family that an intensive CME program would be his best option for accelerated physical development.
Ramon Cuevas is a Dr in Chile who created a method of physiotherapy called the Cuevas Medek Exercises. It is psychomotor therapy scientifically proven to help children with neurological challenges, specifically mobility disorders. He runs the CME Physical Therapy Centre in Santiago, Chile. His website is www.cuevasmedek.com
The family is therefore seeking your financial support to make a trip to the CME Physiotherapy Centre in Chile possible.
Thank you in advance for any assistance!
