The Shrine Committee of Our Lady of Montserrat Roman Catholic Church, Tortuga, is requesting a generous donation to assist with the restoration of its 144-year old Shrine. The church is the oldest wooden Catholic Church in Trinidad and Tobago, and is of tremendous spiritual and historical significance. It is noted for its many spiritual artefacts, such as its 20 restored stained-glass windows, and an over 200-year old Black Madonna Statue.
Our Lady of Montserrat is listed on both the National Trust and the Ministry of Works and Transport Historical Division’s Registry of Historic Buildings.
A 2019 survey report revealed extensive termite destruction of 70% of the church’s structure. Over the past year, we have noted, with great concern, that the structure has deteriorated significantly, partly resulting from its intermittent closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Urgent restoration work, estimated to cost $TT 2.5 million, is required on the church.
We thank you in advance for your kind contribution toward this restoration project, as we strongly believe that, apart from its spiritual appeal, our church is an important part of Trinidad and Tobago’s heritage, and as such, every effort must be made to preserve this national treasure.
