The world has seen sweeping changes in 2020 and the Contemporary Choreographers’ Collective (COCO) still aims to provide a platform for dance artists to respond to all that’s happening. As such they have partnered with WACK 90.1fm to take their annual dance festival 'COCO Dance Festival 2020: ALIEN' online on October 24 and 25, 2020 at 2:00pm AST as they encourage dance artists to explore the rich intersection of the moving body and the moving image.
This year their overarching festival theme is ALIEN. As a world, we’ve had so many stranger-than-fiction moments in just a few months – an unknown (alien) virus; the worldwide struggle against the alienating scourge of systemic racism; a future that feels alien and unknown to us, and, given the recent increase in media attention to extra-terrestrial theories, we can’t rule out a near future that includes aliens from another part of the universe.
The performances will feature both juried and specially invited guests showcasing the work of 24 choreographers from nine countries including TT, Barbados, Jamaica, USA, Latvia, Norway and Mexico. According to the COCO production team, composed of Sonja Dumas, Nancy Herrera, Dave Williams and Nicole Wesley, “Covid19 has brought into sharp focus some stranger-than-fiction occurrences and events as we deal with a virus and way of life previously alien to us.
So it's with a new sense of resilience, inventiveness and bravery that we step into COCO Dance Festival 2020. The event will be streamed free of charge on Facebook by Wack 90.1FM but we ask all our viewers to please DONATE as performing artistes worlwide contine to feel the pinch !!
