The DATT is a charitable non-governmental organization with the mission of helping those affected by diabetes through education, advocacy, screening and research. The DATT children with Diabetes Fund services children with diabetes (type1 & 2) and supports programs to promote activities and behaviours which serve to prevent new incidences of diabetes (type 2) and pre-diabetes.
Our main projects are:
1. Children with Diabetes Camps- We have been hosting the FREE camps for children living with diabetes (mostly children with Type 1 Diabetes). This year, the DATT will be hosting a FREE camp for children with diabetes on August 24-26th 2020. We are living in a new normal so to keep our children and their families safe, we will be hosting the camp virtually. Over the course of 3 days, we will send packages to the children's homes so that they can interact with our facilitators and other campers. Children with learn about diabetes care, medication, food and exercise. Activities include interactive cooking sessions, tie-dye, mask making, home gardening projects and many other engaging sessions. Call 6720864 or 7545767 to register.
2. Teen Lifestyle camp - A new initiative started by the DATT as we observe the alarming trend of increasing childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. This interactive camp is FREE for all children enrolled. We teach children who show diabetes risk factors about balanced nutrition, physical activity and stress management through fun interactive sessions. Children are placed into teams which compete against each other in cooking competitions, skits and sports. Our aim is to empower these children and their parents so that we can see weight loss or improvement in glucose tolerance so that they can live healthier and happier lives.
3. Children’s Fun Days and Christmas treats - We aim to take our children with diabetes on fun days across T&T as we foster the network of children with diabetes and their parents. At Christmas time we have a Christmas treat for these children which is designed to be suited to their needs. On those days we want them to feel no different from any other child.
