A Man Who Refuses to Give Up
For David Anthony "Christopher" Gervais, life has always been about hard work and perseverance. As a former labourer and handyman, he spent years working with contractors and taking on private jobs to make ends meet. But in December 2018, one job changed his life forever.

While working on a roof in Siparia, installing flashbands to prevent leaks, the heat from the galvanize burned the bottom of his foot, creating an ulcer that would become the beginning of an unimaginable journey.

David, who had already been living with diabetes for 30 years, sought immediate hospital care. The ulcer appeared to be healing at first, but soon, an infection spread to his great toe, forcing him to undergo amputation in 2019.

A year later, despite ongoing medical visits, the infection had silently continued spreading. By the time it was caught, it was too late. The doctors had no choice but to amputate his right leg, below the knee.

Learning to Live Without a Leg – A Battle of Strength & Pain
David was given crutches, but no one taught him how to use them. He had to figure it out on his own through trial, error, and sheer willpower. He refused to stagnate and refused to confine himself to a wheelchair, even though the crutches were never meant to last this long.

Now, at 59 years old, as he approaches his 60th birthday, the fight has only become harder. His life today is a daily battle of endurance, pain, and faith:
  • Every single day, despite the severe pain, he travels from La Brea to San Fernando using his crutches—a journey that would be exhausting for anyone, but for him, it’s almost unbearable.
  • His only source of income is his NIS payments of $1,600 TTD per month—barely enough to cover basic necessities, let alone the cost of a prosthetic leg.
  • His crutches, now over 5 years old, have damaged the nerves in his arms, leaving him in constant pain. He has lost so much strength that even opening a bottle of water is a struggle.
  • A prosthetic leg is not just about walking—it’s about survival. He knows that if he doesn’t get one soon, his arms will fail him completely, and he will have no choice but to rely on a wheelchair, which would limit his independence even further.

How I Met David – A Moment That Changed My Perspective & Why I Had to Help
I first met Mr. David Gervais in February 2025, during my commute from work. I had stopped by a small store on High Street, San Fernando, to grab a quick snack before heading to the gym. While eating my snack, I decided to take a seat.

That’s when David spoke up.
"You should sit while you eat," he said kindly, as if looking out for me.
And then, almost as if it was meant to be, he followed with a question—
"Do you believe in miracles?"
I paused, considering the weight of the question, before answering, "Yes."
He nodded in agreement, and from there, he began sharing his story—his journey of perseverance, his daily struggle on crutches, and his dream of obtaining a prosthetic leg. He spoke of how, every single day, he travels to San Fernando to ask for small donations, holding onto the hope that one day he’ll walk again.
As I listened, I found myself caught between his reality and my own.

I thought about my life—the things I took for granted. The simple act of walking, moving freely, and being able to work on myself, physically. In that moment, I was confronted with my own mortality—how easily something so fundamental, something I had never given a second thought, could be taken away.
David's story reminded me of how blessed I am. No matter the struggles I face, I still have my body, my health, my ability to work, to train, and to improve myself. Whatever minor pains or hardships I might complain about, they paled in comparison to his reality. And yet, he wasn’t complaining, he was fighting.

Something in me knew I couldn’t just walk away.

I told him, "I have an idea. I don’t know exactly how to do this—I’ve never done anything like it before, but I want to help." And even still, without hesitation, he accepted. He gave me his contact information with nothing more than faith—faith that a stranger he had just met might actually help him take a step toward his goal.

That’s why I started this fundraiser. Because David deserves a chance. And if there’s anything I’ve learned from meeting him, it’s that sometimes, we have to be the miracle someone else is waiting for.

He’s Done Everything He Can – Now He Needs Your Help
For the past two years, David has been tirelessly saving every dollar he can, asking for small donations from strangers during his daily travels. He has managed to gather $6,000 TTD, but he still needs $14,000 TTD more to reach his goal.

The prosthetic leg and installation will cost $20,000 TTD, and the company providing the service (T&T Orthotics & Prosthetics, LLC, LTD.) is based in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

David has already agreed to sign a legally binding document, ensuring that every dollar donated goes directly toward his prosthetic leg, medical procedures, and rehabilitation.
