My name is Joseph Bertrand, and I’m a cultural heritage specialist dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history and culture of Trinidad and Tobago. My life’s work is rooted in connecting people to the histories, places, and traditions that shape our national identity.
In 2024, I produced The Lost Tapes: 1990 Attempted Coup Audio Documentary. A deeply personal project that features rare audio recordings from Radio 610’s live broadcast during the six-day siege. This audio documentary, available on Spotify, marks a step toward commemorating a chapter of our past that is too often forgotten.
But there is still so much more to preserve and share.
For 2026, I am embarking on an ambitious project to deepen our collective understanding of the 1990 attempted coup through both podcast and film. With your support, I hope to bring the following to life:
-
The Radio 610 Podcast – An oral history series spotlighting the voices of the brave men and women behind the mic during the coup, offering firsthand accounts of how they kept the nation informed and calm in real time.
-
Your Voice Series – A platform for citizens to share their personal experiences before, during, and after 1990, helping to build a more inclusive and human-centered archive of this watershed moment.
-
Narrative Film Project – Drawing from over 20 years of research and primary source materials, I aim to produce a film that reminds us of what was and how far we have come in 35 years.
-
Establishment of a 1990 Attempted Coup Archive – A permanent, accessible repository for interviews, photographs, recordings, and documents that will ensure this history is preserved for future generations.
This is more than a project, it’s a mission to keep our national memory alive, not as something distant or static, but as a living, breathing part of who we are. With your help, we can honour those who have passed, begin to heal the wounds, inform the younger generations, and shape a future where our stories are never silenced.
I invite you to be part of this journey.
